Job description

Management of mechanical operations – external fleet

  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises mechanical maintenance activities for the external fleet deployed on job sites to ensure availability, reliability, and operational continuity.
  • Acts as the primary technical point of contact for the external fleet on-site and supports operators, foremen, and field teams in diagnosing and resolving mechanical, hydraulic, and operational issues.
  • Monitors preventive and corrective maintenance for the external fleet based on operational priorities, hours of use, reported breakdowns, and production requirements.
  • Coordinates mechanical interventions on-site, mobilizes mobile mechanical resources, and supervises specialized subcontractors called upon to work on the external fleet.
  • Monitors the performance of the external fleet on-site, documents recurring breakdowns, identifies causes of failure, and recommends sustainable corrective measures to improve equipment reliability.
  • Maintains constant operational communication with clients, field teams, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders to ensure rapid and effective coordination related to the external fleet.
  • Plans requirements for parts, components, tools, and resources for work on the external fleet and ensures their availability according to site priorities.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety standards, internal procedures, and best mechanical practices during work on the external fleet at job sites.

Administrative Management and Cost Control

  • Manages the administrative aspects of mechanical work on the external fleet in the MCS system, including opening, updating, tracking, and closing work orders.
  • Maintains technical and operational documentation for the external fleet, including maintenance histories, service reports, mechanical follow-ups, and equipment files.
  • Compiles and validates the hours of use for external fleet equipment to ensure maintenance tracking, cost control, and work planning.
  • Performs administrative follow-up for subcontractors assigned to the external fleet, including the validation of timesheets, hours worked, and billable work.
  • Monitors costs related to external fleet maintenance, including labor, parts purchases, external service calls, and on-site expenses.
  • Coordinates the purchase of parts, components, and supplies needed to maintain the external fleet and ensures that lead times and costs are optimized.
  • Receives, prioritizes, and coordinates service requests related to the external fleet from job sites, customers, operators, and internal teams.
  • Oversees the onboarding, integration, and supervision of external mechanical resources and subcontractors on-site to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient execution of work.
  • Works closely with the mechanical shop to ensure alignment between the needs of the external fleet, equipment preparation, parts availability, and work prioritization.
  • Actively participates in the continuous improvement of maintenance practices, troubleshooting methods, and mechanical management processes applicable to the external fleet.

Required Skills

  • Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) in Heavy Equipment Mechanics or any combination of education and experience considered equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in heavy equipment, construction equipment or mobile machinery mechanics.
  • Experience in the maintenance, diagnosis and repair of cranes or lifting equipment is considered a strong asset.
  • Proven experience coordinating mechanical work on job sites, including the management of priorities, interventions and resources.
  • Experience coordinating work teams, subcontractors or mobile resources in an operational environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of heavy equipment mechanics, including the diagnosis of hydraulic, electrical and electronic components.
  • Strong planning, coordination and prioritization skills in a fast-paced and constantly evolving field environment.
  • Ability to supervise internal and external stakeholders while maintaining effective coordination between field teams, operations and suppliers.
  • Strong command of French, both spoken and written, and ability to understand technical documentation written in English.
  • Functional proficiency with Microsoft Office tools; experience with a maintenance management software such as MCS is considered an asset.
  • High level of autonomy, attention to detail and organizational skills in managing multiple files and interventions simultaneously.
  • English proficiency is essential for this role due to daily interactions with colleagues, clients and partners who are primarily located outside Québec, as well as to understand regulatory requirements, technical instructions and specifications.
