Job description

More specifically, the Vessel Superintendent’s main responsibilities are to:

 

        • Planning, organizing, directing, controlling and evaluating the activities of the vessels under his/her responsibility;
        • Assisting and supporting the company’s business units;
        • Compliance with regulatory requirements, safety policies and procedures;
        • Implementation of quality, health, safety and environmental management systems;
        • Communication and enforcement of drug, alcohol, environmental and safety policies;
        • Compliance with laws, regulations and requirements of maritime authorities and customers;
        • Regular ship visits and inspections with follow-up reports;
        • Preparation for and participation in internal and external audits and inspections;
        • Implementation of quality, safety and environmental corrective and preventive measures;
        • Application of performance standards and risk analysis;
        • Participation in accident investigations and implementation of preventive and corrective measures;
        • Data collection for performance indicators;
        • Planning continuous improvement activities;
        • Manage maintenance, repairs and procurement to meet budgets and financial targets;
        • Follow-up of maintenance system and regulatory inspections;
        • Supplier management and invoice verification;
        • Participation in hiring and managing personnel;
        • Quality staff relations and customer satisfaction;
        • Application of performance appraisal and development policies for flight personnel;
        • Identification of staff training needs;

 

Working conditions

 

        • Permanent, daytime position
        • 37.5 hours per week;
        • Availability bonus; on-call according to emergencies/operations

Required Skills

 

        • Chief engineer’s, captain’s or naval architect’s certificate, or equivalent
        • Experience at sea and experience in ship repairs, including shipyards
        • Experience in commercial shipping
        • Experience in internal and external audits and ship inspections
        • Experience with classification societies and various regulations
        • Fluently bilingual, both written and spoken*.
        • Sense of responsibility and commitment
        • Strong organizational and planning skills
        • Excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills
        • Problem-solving skills
        • Knowledge and mastery of MS Office software

 

* For the position of Vessel Superintendent, knowledge of English is required for communications with suppliers, crew members, classification societies and out-of-province partners.
