Job description

The Project Director reports to the Vice President and General Manager and is responsible for leading a portfolio of projects aimed at improving the operational performance of the Desgagnés fleet’s vessels while minimizing their environmental impact (at sea, in the air, and on land), all in compliance with applicable national and international regulations. The Project Director may also be called upon to contribute to Desgagnés’ corporate fleet renewal projects, with a particular focus on the commissioning of these new vessels.

In a perspective of effective and safe implementation of the projects described above, the Project Director plays a key role in the planning, coordination and managerial monitoring of the implementation of such projects, with a particular emphasis on the planning, coordination, communication, training and commitment of teams on land and at sea to achieve the objectives.

 

Main responsibilities

        • Manage the planning (preparation of technical specifications, requirements documents, master schedules, main budgets, etc.) and coordinate the execution of technical projects, from the feasibility study stage through to commissioning, including a change management plan to support teams on land and at sea. Where applicable, prepare and submit grant/funding applications to the relevant authorities.
        • Support the managers responsible for the technical management of both Desgagnés vessels in the implementation of targeted projects aimed at reducing fuel consumption and emissions, all in accordance with the requirements of applicable national and international regulations.
        • Deploy the VeemFleet software solution both on land and aboard all Desgagnés vessels to contribute to reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Integrate this new software solution with Desgagnés‘ information and technology infrastructure to facilitate access to a single source of information and operational decision-making (technical and commercial) for all internal stakeholders.
        • Coordinate the planning and execution of a project to update Desgagnés’ vessel maintenance programs, including the redesign of Desgagnés‘ “Planned Maintenance System” (PMS) software solution. Implement a structured and rigorous management process to subsequently manage any changes applicable to these maintenance programs.
        • Act as the focal point at Transport Desgagnés regarding the Groupe Desgagnés digital transformation program. To do this, support the corporate project manager in the planning and execution of projects for the implementation and/or optimization of enterprise software solutions applicable to ship maintenance, inventory management on land and at sea, purchasing, crew management, etc.
        • Prepare and maintain management dashboards to facilitate managerial monitoring of projects (in each phase of a project’s lifecycle) underway at Transport Desgagnés.
        • Act as the lead for the key “change management” process and direct the work of the Transport Desgagnés Change Management Committee. Monitor regulatory developments in Canada and internationally and coordinate the analysis of anticipated impacts at Transport Desgagnés.
        • Under the direction of the Executive Vice-President – Special Projects and Operations, contribute to new ship construction programs, with a particular emphasis on the development of training programs for employees on land and at sea, on the establishment of service and spare parts purchase agreements with equipment manufacturers and suppliers, on the development of a maintenance program and on the integration of these ships into the operational and management information ecosystem of Transport Desgagnés.

Required Skills

        • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma of College Studies (DEC) in naval architecture, industrial engineering, or mechanical engineering. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) is an asset.
        • Solid experience of at least ten (10) years as a technical project manager. Practical experience managing technical projects in the maritime sector is required. In particular, participation in shipbuilding and new vessel commissioning projects is an asset.
        • Proficiency in standard Microsoft Office suite software and project management software.
        • Practical knowledge of maritime regulations applicable in Canada and internationally is an asset.
